Los Angeles to Las Vegas EV Road Trip
Drive from LA to Vegas in your EV with plenty of fast charging options along I-15. One of the most EV-friendly corridors in the country.
Route Overview
The LA to Las Vegas corridor along I-15 is one of the best EV road trip routes in America. Tesla built some of its earliest Supercharger stations along this route, and today you'll find fast charging options every 30-50 miles.
Why This Route Is Great for EVs
The I-15 corridor between LA and Vegas has been an EV-friendly route since the early days of the Model S. Charging infrastructure is mature and redundant — if one station is full, the next is never far. Most EVs with 250+ miles of range can make it with just one or two stops.
Key Highlights
- Barstow is the natural midpoint stop with multiple charging options and food
- Primm on the Nevada border has fast chargers right off the highway
- Baker (home of the world's tallest thermometer) has charging if you need a top-up
- The route climbs to 4,000+ feet through the Cajon Pass and Mountain Pass — expect 5-10% more energy use on the way to Vegas
- Coming back to LA is more efficient (net downhill)
Seasonal Tips
- Summer: Temperatures in the Mojave regularly exceed 110°F. Your range will drop 10-20% from AC use and battery thermal management. Charge to 90%+ before the desert stretch.
- Winter: Much better for efficiency. Mild desert temperatures and no AC needed.
- Holidays: Supercharger stations in Barstow and Primm can have 30+ minute waits on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Leave early or late to avoid crowds.
What to Know Before You Go
- Charge to 100% at home before leaving LA. Home electricity is 5-10x cheaper than DC fast charging — start full and save money. If you don't have a home charger yet, homechargingpros.com has setup guides and charger reviews.
- Download PlugShare and the Tesla app before your trip. PlugShare shows real-time charger status so you don't drive to a broken station. The Tesla app is required for non-Tesla vehicles at Superchargers.
- Set your car's navigation to Barstow to trigger battery preconditioning. This warms (or cools) the battery for faster charging and can cut your stop time by 30% in extreme temperatures.
- Bring a CCS-to-NACS adapter (or vice versa) as backup. In the desert, you want access to every available charger, not just one network.
- Check your tire pressure before leaving. The desert heat and highway speeds amplify the range impact of low tires. Properly inflated tires can save you 15-20 miles of range.

Hotel Recommendations
Vegas hotels on the Strip rarely have EV charging. Look for hotels with Tesla Destination chargers or Level 2 stations:
- The Venetian/Palazzo — Tesla Destination chargers in the parking garage
- Wynn/Encore — EV charging available in valet
- MGM Resorts properties — Several have added Level 2 chargers
- Off-Strip hotels often have better (and free) charging options
