Why This Route Is Moderate

The route from Portland heads south on I-5 to Eugene/Roseburg, then east into the Cascades. The last 70-80 miles have limited charging infrastructure and significant elevation gain. You need to plan your charging stops carefully, especially in winter when the park's north entrance is often closed.

  • Salem — Oregon's capital. Stop at the Oregon State Capitol building.
  • Eugene — Home of the University of Oregon. Great food and beer town.
  • Roseburg — Wine country along the Umpqua Valley
  • Crater Lake — The main event. Rim Drive (33 miles around the crater) is one of the most scenic drives in America.

Crater Lake Details

  • Elevation: Rim Village sits at 7,100 feet
  • Rim Drive: 33-mile loop around the crater. Open July through October (weather dependent).
  • Cleetwood Cove Trail: The only trail to the water's edge. Steep 1.1-mile descent (and you have to climb back up).
  • Wizard Island: Boat tours available in summer to this volcanic island in the lake.
  • No charging at Crater Lake: There are no EV chargers within the park. Charge fully before entering.

Critical Charging Strategy

  1. Charge at Eugene or Roseburg on I-5 (abundant fast chargers)
  2. Charge again at Roseburg if you haven't — this is your last reliable fast charging
  3. Enter the park with 80%+ battery
  4. Rim Drive (33 miles with elevation changes) uses more energy than you'd expect — budget 50-60 miles of range for it
  5. Exit the park and charge in Klamath Falls (south) or head back to Roseburg/Eugene

Seasonal Tips

  • Summer (July-September): The only time the full Rim Drive is guaranteed open. Warm, sunny, and perfect for hiking.
  • Fall: Rim Drive may close early due to snow. Check park conditions before going.
  • Winter/Spring: Most park roads are closed. The south entrance to Rim Village is usually open, but access is limited. The park gets 40+ feet of snow annually.

Where to Stay

  • Crater Lake Lodge — Right on the rim. Book 6+ months ahead. No EV charging.
  • The Cabins at Mazama Village — Inside the park. Rustic, no charging.
  • Klamath Falls — 60 miles south. Hotels with charging options, and a Tesla Supercharger in town.
  • Roseburg/Eugene — If you want to charge overnight before or after the park visit.
